Best Online Law Programs in the USA

This is an unranked selection of online and hybrid programs at U.S. law schools: nine hybrid or online J.D. programs and seven graduate programs (LL.M.s for lawyers and legal studies master's degrees for non-lawyers). Each entry says what must be done in person and, where the school states it, which states restrict bar eligibility. Use it to compare formats, then confirm bar admission rules with the relevant state bar before enrolling.

Arizona

  • Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, Arizona State University logo

Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law, Arizona State University

    Phoenix, Arizona, United States

JD / professional law degree: Juris Doctor (JD) Online (part-time)

ASU Law's part-time online J.D. is the only J.D. here whose page states no required campus attendance at all; optional short in-person courses exist, and most classes are asynchronous with announced blocks of synchronous learning. The electives are aimed at public service and rural practice, and remote students can join clinics that teach remotely and do externships locally. The ABA lists ASU as a school with a fully online distance division, and the school says graduates appear to meet the criteria in most, not all, jurisdictions.

California

  • UC Berkeley School of Law logo

    UC Berkeley School of Law

    Berkeley, California, United States

LLM / Master of Laws: LL.M. Executive Track

Berkeley's LL.M. Executive Track is for practising lawyers and awards the same LL.M. as the traditional track, in either a remote-plus-summer format (part-time online in spring and fall, then one full-time summer in Berkeley) or two consecutive full-time summers. Summer courses run in compressed blocks of two to four courses with exams straight after, and online courses are put at about 15 hours a week or less. Both formats require full-time summer residence; the page states nothing on bar eligibility.

  • Pepperdine Caruso School of Law logo

    Pepperdine Caruso School of Law

    Malibu, California, United States

Legal studies master’s: Master of Legal Studies (MLS) - Online

Pepperdine's online MLS is mostly asynchronous but requires two weekend residencies on the Malibu campus for networking and hands-on simulations, a hard in-person condition that the school's FAQ states directly. Optional concentrations are dispute resolution, human resources and litigation, and the school notes extra costs for residencies and travel. The school says the program has WSCUC accreditation and ABA acquiescence; the ABA list we read covers J.D. programs only, so that claim is attributed to the school and the degree does not qualify anyone to practise.

Its distinguishing feature is the cooperative legal education requirement: a semester-long co-op field placement with a reflections seminar and a second practical term, each of at least 275 hours. The school states plainly that FlexJD students cannot currently sit for the bar exam in New York or Alabama.

JD / professional law degree: Online JD Program

Detroit Mercy's online J.D. mixes asynchronous and synchronous classes over four years and requires one clinic and one Law Firm Program course within its 90 credits, with no campus visit at any point. It is new: the ABA lists the school with a fully online division, but the first class only started in Fall 2026, so there are no graduates or bar results to examine. The page names no state bar limits, so applicants should check their own state.

How this was chosen

We assessed the specific remote offering rather than the school as a whole: live versus asynchronous delivery, every required residency or intensive, experiential components open to remote students, and what the school itself says about bar eligibility. Distance-education approval of the J.D. formats was checked against the American Bar Association's own list of schools with acquiescence; LL.M. and legal studies degrees are not covered by that list and no claim of professional recognition is made for them. The selection is unranked, covers only programs researched so far, and research is partial.

Criteria

  • Clear statement of the online or hybrid format and every required in-person component
  • For J.D. programs: listed by the ABA as having acquiescence to offer a distance education division, plus the bar-eligibility limits the school states
  • Experiential learning (clinics, externships, co-ops, advocacy teams) that remote students can actually reach
  • Named concentrations or subject depth that distinguish the program from a general offering
  • Legal studies degrees and LL.M.s included only with an explicit note that they do not by themselves qualify anyone to practise
  • Paralegal certificates, exam-prep products and programs without a verifiable first class excluded or flagged

Limitations

ABA acquiescence is verified only for the J.D. programs, from the ABA distance-education list read on the review date; the ABA page names no individual program details, so formats and bar limits rest on each school's own pages. Several candidates (for example Pitt, Cornell and Pepperdine) rely on single program pages, and a few school-stated claims about ABA acquiescence for master's degrees could not be matched to any ABA source. Programs that appear in the directory but not in this candidate pool (such as Penn State Dickinson, Duquesne and Michigan) were not assessed here, and no outcome, bar passage or ranking data were used. Some entries carry evidence verified in an earlier pass and were not re-checked in the latest review.
