How this was chosen

Each school was assessed from its own pages (clinics, centres, concentrations, joint and graduate degrees) and from the ABA approved-schools register entry held in our research record; the earlier version of this page was reassessed school by school rather than carried over. The list is not a league table, is not exhaustive, and research is partial; documentation completeness and sponsorship played no part.

Criteria

  • Depth of clinical, co-op or other supervised experiential education
  • Named research centres, institutes and specialist concentrations
  • Joint degrees and breadth of JD, LLM and legal-studies options
  • Scholarly orientation of graduate programs (SJD/JSD, LLM specialisations)
  • Spread across states and regions

Limitations

No ranking publication, bar-passage or employment figure is used or stated, because none could be fetched and verified with jurisdiction, cohort and period. Faculty scholarship could be evidenced only through the centres and degrees schools publish, not assessed directly, and several well-regarded schools in the directory (for example Penn, Cornell, UCLA, UC Davis, Wake Forest and Fordham) are not listed because the evidence gathered here was thinner or their pages could not be read, which is not a judgement on quality. Schools that publish many clinics are over-represented relative to schools whose strengths are less easily quoted. Some entries carry evidence verified in an earlier pass and were not re-checked in the latest review.

Sponsorship never buys inclusion in, or the order of, an editorial selection. Methodology · Sponsorship disclosure
