Applying for an LLM

What LLM applications usually involve: entry requirements, documents, language tests, deadlines and funding.

Entry requirements

Most LLM programs ask for a first law degree or equivalent, sometimes with a minimum grade, and some also consider professional experience. Requirements differ by school and by program; this directory records the prior-law-degree requirement and any admission test only where the school states it.

Typical documents

Schools commonly ask for transcripts, a personal or motivation statement, references, a CV and evidence of language ability for non-native speakers of the teaching language. Some ask for writing samples.

Timing

Deadlines vary and some schools admit on a rolling basis. A listed deadline is shown with its year; past deadlines are not moved forward.

Before you apply

Decide why you want the LLM. If the goal is admission to a bar, check the regulator first: an LLM does not automatically make an international graduate eligible. Browse LLM programs.
