Understanding Country-Specific Qualification Pathways

Why there is no universal route to becoming a lawyer, and how to read the pathway records on this site.

No universal route

Education requirements, examinations, supervised practice and foreign-qualification assessment are set by each jurisdiction's regulator and can differ between professions in the same jurisdiction (for example solicitor and barrister). In several countries the rules also differ between nations, states or provinces.

What a pathway record contains

Each pathway record covers one jurisdiction and one profession and lists, separately: degree recognition, program approval, additional education, examinations, supervised practice, foreign qualification assessment, residency or other restrictions and online study. Each statement carries the regulator's own page, a quote and the date checked.

What to do when a field is empty

An empty field means we have not confirmed it from an official source, not that no requirement exists. Professional eligibility must be confirmed with the relevant regulator.

Keep it current

Regulators change rules. Always check the regulator's current page before relying on a record.
